Justin Thomas comments on the antics at the Presidents Cup

When Jim Furyk announced his six captaincy selections for the U.S. Presidents Cup team earlier this month, two-time major winner Justin Thomas was a notable omission.

The former world number 1 hasn't done enough to qualify automatically despite an improved season after an alarming dip in form in 2023.

However, he still reached the final FedEx Cup playoffs, the Tour Championship in August at East Lake, where he finished seventh, suggesting he would be hard to miss in Furyk's selection.

The fact that he had played in the previous three editions and compiled an impressive overall record of 10-3-2 also worked in Thomas' favor.

These advantages still weren't enough to convince Furyk to select him, who stated at the time: “There are a lot of people I want on this team.” It was a difficult decision for JT. Definitely a difficult decision.

Even though Thomas is sitting out this year's edition at the Royal Montreal, he doesn't miss out on the events and is up

He wrote: “I wasn't sure if I wanted to watch or not but mannnn I enjoyed watching this @PresidentsCup.” There's a lot of golf and emotion out there. It's driving me crazy having to watch from home, but I'm rooting hard for Team USA. LFG BOYS.”

Much of the emotion Thomas mentioned came to the fore on Saturday, particularly after Si Woo Kim, playing alongside fellow South Korean Tom Kim, delivered an epic chip-in for the Internationals during the foursome afternoon session.

He then imitated basketball star Steph Curry's “Night Night” celebration at the Olympics – a moment that was mocked by US player Wyndham Clark shortly after Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay finally ended the Internationals duo's challenge.

Thomas was asked about the Si Woo Kim celebration and he explained that it can be difficult to keep his emotions in check right now.

He wrote: “It’s no surprise that I love seeing guys show emotion and get involved in these team events. As spectators, SW and Tom were the energy sources for their team yesterday. I also think some of these celebrations are so out of body that you don't even know what you're doing haha.

“Although I'm sure some of them went a little further than they intended, that's one of the reasons that makes these events so special. Damned if you do, damned if you don't acknowledge the situation. It’s also easy for me to say that I’m sitting on my couch and it’s not happening to me personally.”

By the end of Saturday's match, the USA had taken control of the game and went 11-7 heading into Sunday's singles, where the team moved closer to its 13th victory in 15 editions since the Presidents Cup began in 1994.
