NBC Sports Bay Area San Francisco 49ers insider Matt Maiocco recently revealed an important detail 49ers talk Podcast (h/t Grant Cohn of Sports Illustrated). Running back Christian McCaffrey is not only dealing with Achilles tendonitis in one leg, he also has it in both legs.

“He has bilateral Achilles tendonitis, so Achilles tendonitis in both legs,” Maiocco explained.

Update: General manager John Lynch mentioned this in a radio interview last week, but it was Maiocco who took the time to clarify the meaning.

McCaffrey recently traveled to Germany to receive treatment for his injury. While head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the running back received treatment, he chose not to reveal any details.

The 49ers are confident McCaffrey's rehab can be ramped up this week.

“Yes, we would like to tackle his rehab more intensively here on Monday,” Shanahan said recently.

The team can open McCaffrey's practice window before the Week 6 game against the Seattle Seahawks and activate him from injured reserve at any time thereafter. However, there remains uncertainty as to when McCaffrey will return to the field.

“Here's the truth: I don't think Christian McCaffrey knows when he's coming back,” ESPN insider Adam Schefter said on TV Monday morning Pat McAfee Show. “I don’t think the 49ers know when he’s coming back. I don’t think anyone knows right now when he’ll be back.”

“Now they've spoken and said they're going to start reinforcing Christian McCaffrey, possibly even this week, to get him back to see how he's doing. And ideally you want to hope and think that he's okay. “I'll feel better that the time off helped.
