A lecturer at the University of Kansas was placed on leave after a video on X showed him suggesting to his class that they shoot men who wouldn't vote for a female president.

“(If you think) men are smarter than girls, you have serious problems,” the man said in the video. “That's what frustrates me. There will be some men in our society who refuse to vote for a potential female president because they believe that women are not smart enough to be president. We could line up all these guys and shoot them.” . You clearly don't understand how the world works.

“Did I say that? Delete that from the recording. I don’t want the deans to know I said that.”

The university confirmed the video was recorded during a lecture this semester but did not identify the speaker.

“We are aware of the video, which was recorded during a class earlier this semester,” said Erinn Barcomb-Peterson, a KU spokeswoman. “The instructor is placed on leave pending further investigation. The instructor sincerely apologizes and deeply regrets the situation. His intention was to highlight his advocacy for women's rights and equality, and he admits that he did a very poor job. “As such, the university has an established process for situations like this and will follow that process.”

In a similar statement to X, KU added that the comments “constituted an inappropriate reference to violence.”

Who is the KU lecturer in the video?

While a name circulated on social media, Barcomb-Peterson did not respond to a request to confirm the instructor's identity. A request for comment to this person's KU email account was not immediately returned.

That person's staff page on the KU Athletics website no longer exists and at least one social media post from an athletics account with that name has been deleted, but as of about 1 p.m. Wednesday, he still appears in the university's online directory as an instructor in health sports and movement science.

Kansas Regents reject “violent rhetoric.”

The University of Kansas is governed by the Kansas Board of Regents, which oversees the state's public higher education institutions.

Blake Flanders, KBOR president and CEO, said in a statement that he was aware of the video and that the instructor was on leave pending KU's investigation “in accordance with established procedures.”

“The board believes that every American citizen has the right to vote as they see fit, without fear of retaliation or violence,” Flanders said. “All of us, especially those in positions of authority, have a responsibility to respect and uphold this right.” The Regents strongly oppose the use of violent rhetoric in our political discourse.”

What Kansas politicians say about KU faculty members' comments

The video was posted Wednesday morning by Ned Ryun, who works in conservative politics and is the son of former U.S. Rep. Jim Ryun, R-Kan., who was a KU track and field superstar.

“Seriously @UnivOfKansas?” Ryun posted. “You let that be said in your classrooms? That men who don't vote for Kamala Harris for president should be lined up and shot?? @RogerMarshallMD @JerryMoran”

U.S. Sen. Roger Marshall, R-Kansas, shared the video on X.

“Disturbing video from @UnivOfKansas professor,” Marshall said. “Anyone who says men who don't vote for Kamala Harris should be 'hired and shot' is crazy and shouldn't be around students or in academia. I trust the @UnivOfKansas will take immediate action and fire this professor.”

Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach also shared the video on X:

“KS Regents: We educate leaders, build communities, and make discoveries that change the world.

“KU Professor: Some men in our society will refuse to vote for a female Prez because they believe that women are not smart enough to be Prez. We could line up all these guys and shoot them.”
