A 34-year-old man is in custody after Minneapolis police were called to 10 East Grant Street Monday afternoon after multiple 911 callers and officers reported hearing gunshots inside a building.

According to the Minneapolis Police Department, officers were on duty on the 10th floor of an apartment building around 3:15 p.m. and heard “suspected gunshots” in the hallway. After police learned which unit the suspect was in, they evacuated the building and began negotiations.

During negotiations, the man broke a hole through the wall in the hallway and threw items out the window and through the hole in the wall, an MPD release said.

The man was eventually tasered and taken into custody.

According to police, he has minor injuries and there are no other injuries at this time. Police believe the man was injured before he was taken into custody.

The MPD SWAT Unit and MPD Crisis Negotiations Team responded to the incident.

According to law enforcement, no evidence of gunfire has been found at this time.

According to MPD officials, the suspect was booked into the Hennepin County Jail on a charge of criminal damage to property. Officials say they believe mental health issues contributed to Monday's incident.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara held a news conference to discuss the incident at 5:15 p.m. Watch the full video below.

“I am incredibly grateful to the officers, SWAT team members and crisis mediators who responded today,” said Chief O’Hara. “They heroically and with great restraint attempted to save people they believed were in danger of being shot. They developed a comprehensive plan to quickly and safely take this individual into custody. I’m just incredibly grateful to them, and I’m grateful that we were able to finish it relatively quickly, in about an hour and a half, without anyone else getting hurt.”

Chopper 5 captured several images of the police and SWAT response during the disturbance.
