CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) – We started our Friday with some showers and thunderstorms across the southern part of the state! Unfortunately, these showers will quickly subside and we will have dry and mild weather again.

Your first warning: Windy and dangerously dry

As the clouds and storms of this early morning disappear, the sky becomes sunnier. We will feel a light easterly breeze that will help moderate our highs a bit. Values in the low to mid 70s seem likely. If you have plans for Friday evening, it should be a great evening to be out and about. However, if you are traveling late, a light jacket may be necessary.

A cold front with stronger southerly winds awaits us on Saturday. This could result in some gusts reaching 25 to 35 mph, which would make for quite a breezy wind. These winds and lots of sunshine will also push temperatures into the mid to upper 80s.

Further burning bans in force

As we return to a dry and windy pattern, the risk of widespread fires remains. This is why we are seeing more and more counties in the TV9 viewing area enact burn bans. This also serves as a good reminder to avoid any outdoor burning and to be careful of anything that could start a fire.

The weekend: Variable

Because the air is drier, our temperatures depend heavily on the wind. By the end of the weekend our winds will shift back to the north, bringing cooler temperatures to the area. Temperatures will start to cool down to the mid 70s on Sunday, rising from the lower 70s on Monday to the mid and upper 70s through the rest of next week!
