Nashville SC's dream scenario was just four minutes away from becoming a reality. Then Gabriel Pirani woke Nashville up with a gallon of glacier-cold water.

The DC United reserve striker scored two goals in injury time to beat Nashville 4-3 in the final game of the regular season at Geodis Park. Pirani's two goals brought NSC (8-15-9, 33 points) from the brink of a season win to the brink of elimination from the MLS playoffs in just a few moments.

Nashville isn't entirely out of contention in the Eastern Conference, but making the playoffs for the fifth time in as many seasons would take a bigger miracle than the one DC (9-13-10, 34 points) received. A loss, coupled with two wins from Toronto FC, Philadelphia Union and CF Montréal, would have mathematically eliminated Nashville. Only Montreal won on Wednesday, keeping Nashville's hopes alive for at least a few more days.

Nashville scored first, took the lead in the sixth minute through Alex Muyl's goal, and came back to retake the lead just before halftime through a direct free kick from Hany Mukhtar. Muyl's second goal made it 3-1 in the 62nd minute and temporarily moved Nashville within one point of a playoff spot. But 13 minutes later Christian Benteke reduced the lead and Pirani did the rest.
