I'm always happy with myself when I clear the purple group early. That's because it's said to be the most difficult of the four words, and while that's not always the case, it's usually the one with the most interesting format, as they're rarely just synonyms for another word, like yellow is and green is often the case. Today Lila was really creative – a striking number of arms (or lack thereof). I focused on VENUS DE MILO, which seemed to have few possible connections to anything: it is a statue, a work of art, and a figure without arms. Looking at the board I spotted OCTOPUS and then SHIVA, and although it took me a while to realize that SLOT MACHINE also fit, I was pleased when all four turned out to be correct. The other three groups were mundane in comparison – although I will always have fun thinking about ROBERT DE NIRO FILMS…

What is NYT Connections?

NYT Connections is one of several increasingly popular word games from The New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: Green is easy, Yellow is slightly more difficult, Blue is often quite difficult, and Purple is usually very difficult.

On the bright side, you don't technically have to solve the last question as you can answer it through a process of elimination. Additionally, you can make up to four mistakes, giving you some breathing room.

However, it's a bit more complicated than something like Wordle and there are lots of ways to trip you up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other puns that could obscure answers.
