The Select Committee has designated Monday, October 14, as Indigenous Peoples Day, in conjunction with the national celebration of the invaluable contributions and resilience of Indigenous peoples.

“Since time immemorial, American Indians, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians have built vibrant and diverse cultures, protecting lands, languages, spirits, knowledge and traditions through generations,” said the proclamation endorsed by board members Monday night.

Our country “was designed on the promise of equality and equal opportunity for all people – a promise that we have never fully fulfilled, despite the extraordinary progress we have made over the years.” This is especially true when it comes to preserving the rights and dignity of the indigenous peoples who have lived here long before the colonization of the Americas began,” the proclamation continues. “For generations, federal policy has systematically sought to assimilate and displace Native peoples and eradicate Native cultures. Today, we recognize the resilience and strength of Indigenous peoples and the immeasurable positive impact they have had on every aspect of American society.”

The proclamation notes that Indigenous peoples have served and continue to serve in the United States Armed Forces with distinction and honor – at one of the highest rates of any group – and “defend our security every day.” Today, we recognize the significant sacrifices that Indigenous people have made to this land – and recognize their many ongoing contributions to our nation.”
The select board encourages the Hingham community to “celebrate and recognize the many indigenous communities and cultures that make up our great country.”

President Joe Biden first proclaimed Indigenous Peoples Day in October last year.
