Authorities responded to Interstate 495 South Monday morning after a sinkhole opened in Haverhill.

The sinkhole occurred just after exit 106, state police said on social media just after 10 a.m. Police officers from Andover and Newbury barracks responded to the scene. The sinkhole was apparently caused by a burst water pipe.

Anyone traveling through the area should expect the situation to have a “significant impact” on traffic. Officials said delays are expected “in the Methuen-Haverhill corridor” and at interchanges near Routes 213, 110, 97 and 125.

A real-time traffic map showed stop-and-go traffic backing up on I-495 South about five miles from the sinkhole.
