SHREVEPORT, La. — A Shreveport police officer was killed and another was critically injured in a rollover crash Friday afternoon, Shreveport police have confirmed.

The off-duty officers were driving a blue Mustang on W. 70th Street and crashed into a white pickup truck when the driver apparently tried to turn left into their path. After the impact, the car skidded along the road, then collided with an empty house and overturned.

Officer Matthew Rhoden, 37, died in the accident.

The other officer, who was not identified, was taken to Ochsner LSU Health Hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to Sgt. Angie Wilhite.

The driver of the van was not injured.

The accident occurred on W. 70 at 2 p.mTh Street at Broadacres Road.

More than 20 Shreveport police, fire and state troopers responded to the scene.

Ward G Councilwoman Ursula Bowman released the following statement: “I am heartbroken to learn of the tragic accident in Ward G that claimed the life of a dedicated Shreveport City Police officer and seriously injured another citizen. This devastating news is profound.” As District G City Councilwoman, I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family of our brave officer who selflessly served and protected our city. The entire city of Shreveport would like to join me in mourning this loss and the affected families in keep our thoughts and prayers. Together we can support each other during this incredibly difficult time.
