The Pittsburgh Steelers have named Russell Wilson their emergency third quarterback for the fifth consecutive season and will start Justin Fields against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football, via NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

This is no surprise as Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said earlier this week that they are preparing to start Fields against the Cowboys.

Wilson has yet to play this season after suffering a calf injury before the season.

The Steelers originally had Wilson as their starting quarterback after both passers underperformed in the preseason, but used Fields due to Wilson's injury.

Wilson is getting closer to returning from his injury and has begun increasing his practice participation this week.

“It seems like (Wilson) is at a point where his participation is going to pick up a little bit in terms of a training environment, a live pocket, if you will,” Tomlin said earlier this week, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN.

“We're not going to draw too many conclusions, but we're just starting this process and we're going to comb through him day by day, assess his ability to move, function and protect himself and evaluate his productivity levels.”

“We will let that guide us as to whether we seriously consider heading into game time this week.”

Tomlin has not yet announced who will be the full-time starting quarterback once Wilson is healthy, although Fields is off to a strong start this season. Fields led the Steelers to a 3-1 record to start the season. Fields didn't necessarily play incredible, but he helped the Steelers get off to a 3-0 start.

Fields threw for 830 yards, three touchdowns and one interception in Sunday's game. He also rushed for 145 yards and three touchdowns. He's improved from his time with the Chicago Bears, when he was more prone to turnovers and was more inconsistent.

Fields have made an impact in the fourth quarter for the Steelers in the last two games. Against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3, Fields led the team with two scoring drives in the fourth quarter, giving them a 20-10 win.

The following week against the Indianapolis Colts, Fields scored three touchdowns in the second half, nearly pulling off a major comeback win. The Steelers failed to make a complete comeback and lost 27-24 to Indianapolis.
