According to police, the suspect, a 37-year-old man, was arrested shortly after the attack in the southwest of the city.

Three people were killed and 15 others injured in a knife attack at a suburban supermarket in Shanghai, China's largest city.

The attack occurred Monday in the city's southwest and was the latest in a series of knife attacks in major Chinese cities this year.

The suspect, a 37-year-old man surnamed Lin, was taken into custody shortly afterwards by police responding to the attack, the local Songjiang Police Department said in a statement on Tuesday.

Initial investigations suggested Lin traveled to Shanghai to “vent his anger” after a personal financial dispute, police added.

The knife attack came as China prepared for the traditional Golden Week holiday, which falls around the national holiday on October 1st.

Public stabbings have become increasingly common in China over the years, with authorities often blaming mental illness.

Last month, a 10-year-old Japanese student was stabbed and died from his injuries in the southern city of Shenzhen.

In May, a man killed eight people and injured another with a knife in the city of Xiaogan in central Hubei province.

In 2022, a man carried out a knife attack at a large hospital in Shanghai, injuring 15 people.

He was later sentenced to death.
