The Detroit Tigers face the Cleveland Guardians in Game 1 of the American League Division Series on Saturday at Progressive Field in Cleveland to begin the best-of-five series.

The No. 2 seed Guardians (92-69) earned a bye after winning the AL Central. The No. 6 seed Tigers (86-76) upset the Houston Astros by two games to nil despite having no playoff experience and a tiny payroll.

Game notes: The Tigers won another round of playoff baseball after defeating the Houston Astros 2-0 on the road in the AL Wild Card Series.

The Tigers experienced the ups and downs of a playoff baseball series in two games and emerged victorious to advance to the ALDS. Tarik Skubal delivered a Game 1 win that the bullpen was able to defend late into the night despite the Astros' best performance, and a collective team effort capped by Andy Ibáñez's three-run double to start the eighth inning, to seal the 5-2 win in Game 2 and the series.

Now the Tigers face a familiar opponent and division rival in the Guardians. This is the first time the two teams will meet in the playoffs, despite more than 2,000 meetings in history (the old playoff format helps with this statistic). The Guardians won the season series 7-6, although all of those games occurred on July 30 or earlier before the Tigers' late surge. The Tigers outscored the Guardians 60-50 and lost five games by one run.

The Tigers are on the road for Games 1 and 2 on Saturday and Monday before returning to Detroit for Games 3 and 4 (if necessary). Game 3, the Tigers' first home playoff game at Comerica Park since 2014, is scheduled for Wednesday.
