For many people Wordle is part of your daily routine, but playing every day doesn't necessarily make you a pro.

Fortunately, Newsweek has received insider information on how to solve the game from the game's creator, Josh Wardle.

In an interview with Newsweek in 2021, Wardle – who sold Wordle To The New York Times for an undisclosed seven-figure sum in 2022 – said players should welcome getting the gray tiles that show they haven't guessed correct letters.

“One thing I would like to say is that a lot of people think that the game is just about finding those green and gold letters. If you get that, then in theory you have the information you need, but you don't want to get it.” “I held on to it too much,” Wardle said Newsweek.

He added: “Even if you have most of the letters, it's still worth taking a few tries to further narrow down the options. It is often just as important to learn which letters do not appear in a word. This information can actually be more powerful in many ways, and you don't necessarily notice it at first glance.

Other Wordle Pros also shared their best tips for completing the game.

Erhan Aslan, who teaches linguistics at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom, said Newsweek “One thing I think is important in this game is the choice of starting word,” Aslan said. “It might be helpful to start with words that contain common vowels like e and a, consonants like r and t, and sound sequences.

“Choosing a word that starts with q, z, j, or x, for example, may not be the best choice. After a few guesses, you'll get more feedback. Users must draw on some knowledge of phonetics to narrow down or eliminate some words they might think of.
