Earlier this month, Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield said that former QB Tom Brady created a “tense environment” in Tampa Bay – and Brady didn't take the comment lightly.

Mayfield, who signed with Tampa Bay in 2023 following Brady's retirement, said on the Casa De Klub podcast on Sept. 16 that “everyone was pretty stressed” when Brady was with the franchise.

On Sunday, the future Hall of Famer didn't hold back, clapping back at Mayfield's comments while working as a commentator at the Bucs-Philadelphia Eagles game, which Tampa won 33-16.

“I thought it would be stressful not having Super Bowl rings,” Brady said during the game. “I had the mentality of a champion that I took to work every day. This wasn't a daycare center. If I wanted to have fun, I would take my kids to Disneyland.”

Brady continued, adding that the best approach to football is to have teammates who “push each other out of our comfort zones.”

“Great teammates do that,” he said. “The expectations for us are high. We have to make sure we go out and deliver.”

On the podcast, Mayfield said that he and Brady had “very different personalities” and that Brady left a different locker room environment than the Bucs have now.

“The building was a little different with Tom there. Obviously Tom is different in terms of play. He was talking to everyone, the environment was tense, so I think everyone was pretty stressed,” Mayfield said. “They wanted me to come in, be myself and bring the joy of football back to the boys who weren’t having as much fun.”

Mayfield added that Brady was known for maintaining control of the offense, even if it meant going against the coach.

“You hear some stories that if he didn't like a particular play call and he didn't like it all week and he's still calling it in the game, there may have been an intentional throwaway or throw attempt at the feet.” of the running back or receiver,” Mayfield said. “There was a lot of mind games.”

Mayfield responded to Brady's comments after Sunday's game.

“I think a lot of this was taken out of context,” Mayfield told reporters. “None of it was personal in any way. It's just what he asked the guys to do. This is the aura of Tom Brady. And that’s what he did to bring a championship here.”

“Nothing personal. But yeah – I'm talking before the game – he's obviously happy for me and he knows the guys, so he knows how much fun I have throwing to Mike (Evans) and Chris (Godwin) because he got to do the same thing .” It’s fun to be able to talk to a man like that about the same experience.

Brady's ultra-competitive nature is somewhat infamous, but it has paid off handsomely throughout his career, earning him seven Super Bowl rings, including one with Tampa Bay.

Mayfield, meanwhile, led the team to a 9-8 record and a playoff berth in his only season with the Buccaneers, defeating the Eagles in the wild-card round before losing to the Detroit Lions in the divisional playoffs.

The Bucs improved to 3-1 with Mayfield completing 30 of 47 passes for 347 yards and two touchdowns.
