WASHINGTON – Former President Donald Trump addressed former first lady Melania Trump's comments on abortion in his upcoming memoir, saying in an interview that he encouraged his wife to write down what she believed.

His comments came after the Guardian reported that Melania Trump defended abortion rights and wrote in her book that the government should not interfere with a woman's right to choose Melania, which will be released on October 8th.

Her views differ from those of Donald Trump, who has celebrated the overturn of Roe v. Wade and argued that abortion legislation should be left to the states.

“We talked about it. And I said, you have to write what you believe. I'm not going to tell you what to do. “You have to write down what you believe,” Donald Trump told Fox News Channel’s Bill Melugin on Thursday.

“She is very popular. People love our former first lady, I can tell you that. But I said you have to stay with your heart. That’s what I told everyone: you have to go with your heart,” he added.

Melania Trump wrote in her memoir, “It is imperative to ensure that women have autonomy to decide whether to have children based on their own beliefs, free from any intervention or pressure from the government,” according to the Guardian.

“Why should anyone other than the woman have the power to decide what she does with her own body? “A woman’s fundamental right to individual freedom and her own life gives her the power to terminate her pregnancy if she wishes,” she wrote.

Republicans have had a difficult time finding consensus on the issue of abortion as several polls have shown broad support for reproductive rights among voters. Donald Trump said earlier this week he would veto a federal abortion ban if it came to his desk as president.
