Phillies answer Mets' magic in the ninth inning with Nick Castellano's walk-off NFL Inactives: Week 5, 2024

The Philadelphia Phillies will look to bounce back on Sunday after losing Game 1 of the National League Division Series to the New York Mets, blowing an eighth-inning lead in the 6-2 loss.

New York is on top after its recent comeback win in the best-of-five series, another impressive rally in a magical week that saw the Mets play six games in five days to clinch a playoff spot secure and advance to the NLDS.

After being held scoreless by Phillies ace Zack Wheeler for seven innings in Game 1, the Mets jumped on the Philadelphia bullpen with a five-run win in front of a shocked, sellout crowd at Citizens Bank Park.

Left-hander Cristopher Sanchez (11-0, 3.32 ERA) takes the mound for the Phillies in Game 2, while Luis Severino (11-7, 3.91 ERA) starts for the Mets. Severino picked up the win in Game 1 of the Wild Card Series, limiting the Brewers to three earned runs in six innings.

After the Phillies hit two home runs in the bottom of the sixth to erase their 3-0 deficit, Brandon Nimmo responded with a two-out solo home run off Orion Kerkering in the top of the seventh to give the Mets a 4-3 lead in the lead.

After Luis Severino got the first two outs in the bottom of the sixth, he gave up a single to Trea Turner, followed by a monster two-run home run to Bryce Harper that made it 3-2 and the Phillies finally got to that Brett brought.

Nick Castellanos followed with a solo home run off Severino that tied the game and sent the crowd into a frenzy.

This game goes into the seventh inning tied 3-3.

Pete Alonso hit a solo home run across the opposite field to lead off new Phillies reliever José Ruiz in the top of the sixth, giving the Mets a crucial insurance run and a 3-0 lead.

Mark Vientos' two-run home run in the third remains the only hit of the game, with Luis Severino and Cristopher Sanchez trading zeroes at Citizens Bank Park.

Substitute Jose Ruiz will replace Sanchez and start in Game 6 for Philadelphia.

Mets third baseman Mark Vientos hit a two-run home run early in the third to open the scoring. That brought home Francisco Lindor, who had singled with one out.

Vientos had an outstanding season in his everyday duties for the Mets, finishing the regular season with 27 home runs. He was particularly dangerous against lefties like Phillies starter Cristopher Sanchez, who posted a .300 batting average with an .884 OPS against southpaws in the regular season.

At the end of the third period it is 2-0.

Third baseman Edmundo Sosa's throwing error gave Jose Iglesias an extra base with an infield single to lead off in the top of the second, but Cristopher Sanchez got JD Martinez to jump to second with Starling Marte to center and Francisco Alvarez for grounding First, end the frame.

The Mets are already 0-5 with runners in scoring position.
