Any view of the Northern Lights in Wisconsin is usually reserved for the northern parts of the state. But Wisconsin residents from Milwaukee to Madison were treated to a dazzling light show Sunday evening as strong geomagnetic activity brought the northern lights to skies nationwide.

Several Milwaukee residents reported sightings of pink-green auroras from Atwater Park, while residents of northern Wisconsin spotted bright reds dancing across the sky.

When will the Northern Lights be visible again in Wisconsin?

It's unknown if or when we'll next see a northern lights show as big as Sunday night's in Wisconsin.

Northern lights are caused by geomagnetic storms in space caused by eruptions of solar material. If these storms are strong enough, the Northern Lights can be visible throughout the northern United States, including Wisconsin.

The Space Weather Prediction Center tracks these solar flares and generally issues a geomagnetic storm warning a few days before expected Aurora Borealis sightings.

The SWPC does not currently have any active Northern Lights observations, but you can keep an eye on its space weather updates for the latest information on upcoming geomagnetic storms.
