On Wednesdays we wear pink – but this Thursday we celebrate October 3rd.

If you grew up in the 2000s, the original Mean Girls movie starring Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, and more might have been a great part of your childhood. This year marks not only the film's 20th anniversary, but also a new beginning for the franchise, as the musical adaptation of Mean Girls was released in January.

Fans continue to keep the 2004 film's legacy alive through unforgettable references and quotes, including “October 3rd,” which has taken on a life of its own as Mean Girls Day.

Jonathan Bennett, wearing a striped button-down shirt and graphic tee, looks over his left shoulder as he sits at a desk. Behind him, Lindsay Lohan, also sitting at a desk in a pink sweater, answers.

What does “3. October” in “Mean Girls”?

In one of the film's early scenes, Cady Heron – famously played by Lohan – begins talking “more and more” to her crush Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett).

“On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was,” Lohan says in a voiceover.

“It’s October 3rd,” she says in the scene.

Fans have followed the date for years and even the film's stars paid tribute to it on social media.

Lohan shared a post about the scene in 2021: “It's October 3rd,” she captioned it.

Daniel Franzese, who played Damian in the film, also shared a tribute. In 2021, he thanked fans and the House of Glen Coco for their support.

“On this #MeanGirlsDay, I am grateful for so much this film has brought into my life, including great memories and friendships and constant new adventures,” he wrote at the time.

Here’s how to celebrate “Mean Girls” Day on October 3rd

Below are some of our absolutely amazing ideas for celebrating the holidays:

  • Wear pink (of course!) even if it's not Wednesday.
  • Go to lunch with your friends and reminisce about your favorite Mean Girls quotes.
  • Do something fun, like go to Taco Bell.
  • Eat cheese fries – and enjoy the carbs.
  • As a now older person, spread a little joy and crack a few jokes! But don't take your wig off when you get drunk like Damian's grandma.
  • Head to the mall for a little retail therapy, just like in the movie.
  • Get on stage and recite Kevin G's rap.
  • Dress up as Santa Claus and perform “Jingle Bell Rock” with your best friends.
  • Do a blowout so that your hair is so big that you can fill it with secrets.
  • Alternatively, check your local bookstore for this slightly gross but still funny line from Amanda Seyfried's character Karen Smith: “Gretchen, I'm sorry I laughed at you when you had diarrhea at Barnes & Noble. And I.” I'm sorry for telling everyone, and I'm sorry for repeating it now.
  • Stream the new musical adaptation of “Mean Girls” on Paramount+.
  • And most obviously, you can rewatch the film that shaped so many of us! It is available on Paramount Plus, Apple TV and for rent/purchase on Prime Video.

There are no limits to how you can celebrate the day!
