The debate, moderated by CBS, will take place at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York City. The rules for today's debate are similar to those set for the presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris three weeks ago and the Trump-Biden debate in June.

According to CBS News, at the start of the event, presenters will introduce the candidates in order of incumbent party, with Walz first. There will be no opening statement and campaign staff will not be allowed to interact with the candidates during the two four-minute commercial breaks.

Walz will stand behind the podium on the left side of the stage, which is located to the right of the audience screens. Meanwhile, Vance will stand at the podium on the right side of the stage but to the left of the audience's screens. Candidates are given two minutes to answer a question, two minutes to respond and one minute to rebut. Candidates may receive an additional minute at the discretion of the moderator.

The main difference between the presidential and vice presidential debates is that the candidate's microphone will not be muted when his opponent speaks tonight. However, CBS still reserves the right to turn off microphones.
