Kansas City improved to 4-0 after a 17:10 win over the Chargers, but suffered a significant defeat.

Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was forced from the game after quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a nasty blow to the knee while trying to chase down a defender after an interception.

“It's not good,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told CBS Sports' Tracy Wolfson before halftime about Rice.

Rice quickly emerged as the No. 1 receiver for Kansas City, and the playmaker Patrick Mahomes and Andy Reid have been looking for since replacing Tyreek Hill. Before his injury, Rice had posted a team-high 288 receiving yards on 24 receptions and 2 touchdowns. His absence is a huge blow to the Chiefs offense.

When will Rashee Rice return?

Rice's return date is currently unclear. The wideout has been ruled out for Week 5 against the New Orleans Saints on “Monday Night Football,” but there's still a best-case scenario where Rice misses time and doesn't suffer a season-ending injury.

After the Week 4 game against the Chargers, there were reports that the Chiefs feared Rice had suffered a season-ending ACL tear. Rice was scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday after the game, but the outlook was not positive.

On “NFL Live,” ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Rice will miss time, but it's unclear whether his ACL is actually torn. Regardless, Rice is expected to miss some time. ESPN adds that a decision on Rice's injury could come next week.

Rice was not placed on IR, which would sideline him for at least four games.

When did Rashee Rice's injury occur?

Rice suffered his injury in Week 4 of the 2024 NFL season when the Chiefs played the Los Angeles Chargers.

Rice collided with Patrick Mahomes as he attempted to tackle Chargers cornerback Kristian Fulton during an interception return. Mahomes appeared to hit Rice in the front of the knee as he attempted to make a tackle near the sideline. Rice's knee bent backwards due to the force of the blow from Mahomes' shoulder during the tackle attempt. Reis had to be carried to the locker room.

Chiefs WR depth chart

With Rashee Rice out indefinitely, here's what the Chiefs' depth chart looks like at wide receiver:

The Chiefs have these five wide receivers on their 53-man roster.

Rookie first-rounder Xavier Worthy is expected to take on a larger role.

“We’ll see how he does. We have people here who have experience playing in this game. It's not like he's the only one. He doesn’t have to be the only one,” Reid said during a press conference on Worthy’s call with reporters on Monday. “We have a good team there that we can use. Normally we distribute the ball and that is what we will continue to strive for.”

Juju Smith-Schuster led the Chiefs' wide receivers in 2022 with 78 receptions for 933 yards and three touchdowns. He will likely take on a larger role. It's more likely that tight end Travis Kelce becomes the centerpiece of the Chiefs' offense while Rice remains on the sidelines.

The Chiefs have few qualified positions, with fellow wide receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown expected to be out until the playoffs and running back Isiah Pacheco sidelined for six to eight weeks with a broken fibula.
