Where is Pete Carroll now? Explains former Seahawks coach's new jobs with Seattle, USC

This past offseason, the NFL saw two of its longest-tenured head coaches resign from their positions.

First, the Patriots parted ways with long-time boss Bill Belichick. The veteran coach spent 24 seasons with the organization, bringing six Super Bowls to New England and collecting a number of records and accolades along the way. Surprisingly, he wasn't signed this offseason, but Belichick is expected to once again patrol the NFL sidelines.

The other was Pete Carroll. The aging head coach, who has been a fixture with the Seahawks since 2010, reached an agreement with the team to evolve his role in the organization after the 2023 season and stepped down as head coach.

Mike Macdonald was hired as Carroll's replacement. The Seahawks have gone from being the league's oldest to youngest coach, as the former Ravens coordinator is just 37 years old.

But what does Carroll do now? The Sporting News explains his role with the Seahawks and USC.

Where is Pete Carroll now?

In January of this year, the Seahawks announced a change to Carroll's role within the organization. The long-time head coach would change his job to consultant and let someone else lead the coaching staff.

Seattle chairman Jody Allen gave a brief insight into the decision to “evolve” Carroll's role as Seahawks head coach to consultant.

“After thorough discussions and careful consideration of the best interests of the franchise, we have mutually agreed with Pete Carroll that his role will evolve from head coach to remaining with the organization as a consultant,” Allen said in a statement.

“Pete is the winningest coach in Seahawks history, bringing the city its first Super Bowl title and making a tremendous impact on the field and community over the last 14 years. His expertise in leadership and building a championship culture will continue to be an integral part of our future organization.

“Pete will always be a beloved member of the Seahawks family.”

Carroll held an emotional press conference later in the day where he tearfully spoke about his time as Seahawks head coach.

“Since our last game, I've had a few opportunities to talk about it and share my feelings about the team and the organization as well as representing the 12 and my intention to stay with the Hawks,” Carroll said. “I want to make sure that's clear because things have changed so quickly from most people's perspective.

“It was an honor and a thrill to be a part of this program. I loved every minute of it and you saw how much I especially love it. It's exciting that there's such a future here and you can see that. “We know it's happening and it's promising and the club has great goals and great opportunities. It will never happen automatically, there is still a lot to do, but the future is bright.”

Carroll had been linked to retirement rumors as the 2023 regular season came to an end. However, the coach had previously stated that he expected to return for a 15th season in 2024. This did not happen as the Seahawks decided to go in a different direction in 2024 and hired Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald to replace Carroll in the head coaching role.

In addition to his advisory role with the Seahawks, Carroll returned to USC, where he was the Trojans' head coach from 2001-09. Prior to this fall, it was reported that Carroll would be teaching at the university during the spring semester of that academic year.

The university did not provide further details or specify Carroll's role on campus, but he is expected to teach a course in spring 2025.

Pete Carroll's age

Born on September 15, 1951, Carroll began the 2024 NFL season at age 72 but has since turned 73.

He was the oldest coach in the league for some time and joined the short list of members who would coach into their 70s. However, since two veterans, Carroll and Belichick, moved, the door opened for Chiefs boss Andy Reid to secure the new title of oldest head coach in the NFL.
