TL;DR

  • YouTube TV on Android and iOS now has background playback.
  • Background play allows users to continue listening even if they lock their device or exit the app.
  • The feature was previously exclusive to YouTube Premium.

If you are a YouTube Premium subscriber, you are probably aware of the background play feature. This allows you to continue listening to a video even if you lock your device or exit the app. Now this fan-favorite feature is coming to the YouTube TV app.

Previously, background playback was a feature you could only use on YouTube as a Premium subscriber. Since you also pay for YouTube TV, you might think that the feature would be available there too. But that hasn't been the case until now.

As users on Reddit discovered, the feature is now available on YouTube TV for Android. According to the reports, it seems like Google has been slowly rolling out background playback for YouTube TV over the past few weeks. We tested this on our own devices and can confirm that background playback works on Android.

One commenter mentioned that he noticed that background playback was working on his iPhone 14 Pro. However, the feature reportedly stopped working. We were unable to confirm whether the feature is available on iOS.

Since it's a slow release, there's a chance you don't have the feature yet. However, more and more people should have access to it in the coming weeks.
